Professor Miriam Were
Kenyan, Medical Doctor and former UNFPA/CSTAA Director in Ethiopia. Prof. Were served as the WHO representative and Chief of Mission to Ethiopia for three years. She has also served as the chief health and nutrition/senior advisor for UNICEF in Ethiopia.
In her professional career, Prof. Were has been involved in addressing emerging development and health issues such as HIV/AIDS, reproductive health, community participation, gender parity and provision of services in conflict/emergency situations. She is Chair of the Kenya National AIDS Control Council.
Appointed to the AMREF International Board on October 5, 2001 and served as Board Chair from March, 2003 to 2008.
