Mr Mario Raffelli joined the AMREF Board in 2011 after many years in peacekeeping processes as a representative of the Italian Government in different countries all over the world.
Elected to the Italian Parliament in 1979, Mr Raffaelli kept his seat until 1994. In those years, he has been Undersecretay of State for Health (1982), then Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs in charge of Africa and International Organisations (1983-1989). He was a Parliamentary observer during the electoral process in Nicaragua (1990) and Chair of the CSCE Peace Conference for Nagorno-Karabach.
Mr Raffaelli’s international reputation is rooted in his role as chief mediator of the peace process in Mozambique, a process which he led from 1992 to 1994. He is also known and appreciated thanks to his long engagement with Somalia, where he served as Special Representative of the Italian Government to Somalia from 2003 to 2008.
He was recently appointed as Expert for Peace Initiatives for the Horn of Africa during the Italian Presidency of the G8.
Mr Raffaelli is frequently asked to give lectures in Europe in light of his long and successful experience in geopolitical issues. He also writes policy papers and gives advice on request to institutional bodies in Italy and Europe.
