Dr Michael Smalley
British, Scientist, has spent most of his working life in Africa. After attaining a PhD from the London University where he studied health research focusing on malaria, Dr Smalley moved to The Gambia, West Africa, and worked with the UK Medical Research Council as a senior malarialogist. Dr Smalley has also worked at the University of Nairobi in Kenya as a lecturer in human parasitology and at The International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE), where he was responsible for a leading consortium of ICIPE and African Universities providing teaching and research for African graduate students.
From ICIPE, he joined the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) as the director responsible for education, training and information management and networking in Africa. Dr Smalley’s knowledge and experience covers health research and development, teaching and administration, and the application of information technology.
Joined AMREF as Director General in July, 2002.
