9th March, 2009
After the successful 2006 show The Black Pinocchio, SOLD OUT together with AMREF Flying Doctors now present MAPENZI TAMU (Sweet Love). This moving theatre show is performed by youth – for youth. The net profit of the tour will benefit the Dagoretti Child In Need project in Nairobi (Kenya). His Royal Highness the Prince of Orange and Her Royal Highness Princess Máxima of the Netherlands have confirmed their participation at the premiere which will be on Saturday evening 4 April in the Amsterdam RAI Theatre.
MAPENZI TAMU, Swahili for ‘sweet love’ depicts the reality of the health risks in the slums of the African community. Love is not without risk for young Africans. This is what MAPENZI TAMU is about. Young African actors, who live on the streets, convey what love is with a great sense of reality, emotion and sense of humour in a show packed with feeling, street music, rap, hip-hop and jazz. Prior to the show MAPENZI TAMU a gripping documentary will be shown, giving the audience an understanding of where the actors come from and what they experience in their daily lives. The performance shows young people, in a country ravaged by AIDS and teenage pregnancies, but also explores the sentimental and kinder aspects of love. MAPENZI TAMU has already caused quite a stir in Kenya and is now set to bring excitement to The Netherlands.
The net profits of the MAPENZI TAMU tour will benefit AMREF’s Dagoretti Child In Need project. Approximately 125,000 children live on the streets of the Kenyan capital, Nairobi. They have to deal with such problems as neglect, abandonment, hunger and malnutrition, disease, drug abuse, child labour, teenage pregnancies, violence, discrimination and criminality. On a daily basis, AMREF offers care to some of these children in a community centre in the district of Dagoretti. The children are fed and given information and counselling on a healthy and hygienic life. In addition, much attention is paid to leisure activities such as street football, film productions and theatre.
