Outstanding Performance as Health Extension Workers Graduate in Tigray

A colourful graduation ceremony was held on June 2, 2013 for 40 Health Extension Workers (HEWs) following a12-month upgrading course at the Dr Tewelde Health Science College in Mekelle, the capital city of the Tigray National Regional State. During the event, AMREF received the only certificate of appreciation, presented by the deputy head of the Tigray Regional Bureau, for ensuring high quality of training that led to a 100% exam pass rate.

AMREF is supporting the Federal Government of Ethiopia in upgrading of over 3,000 HEWs by 2015 with funding from GlaxoSmithKline and the Barr Foundation. So far 1,289 have graduated while more than 2,000 are registered in seven regions (Oromia, Amhara, Tigray, SNNPR, Harar, Diredawa and Somali).

AMREF’s Human Resource for Health Project manager and Capacity Building focal person Tedla Mulatu presented awards to the students who had recorded the best performance. During the graduation ceremony, students and guests signed the online petition for nomination of a midwife for the Nobel Peace Prize 2015, a component of AMREF’s Stand Up for African Mothers campaign that also seeks to train 15,000 midwives across Africa.
