79 Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVCs) - 47 boys and 32 girls have been selected as recipients of this year’s Wings to Fly scholarship administered through Equity Bank.
The OVCs from the APHIAplus Kamili project performed brilliantly in the 2012 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education and have been admitted to top national and provincial secondary schools such as Lenana, Alliance, Maseno, St. Mary's Yala among others.
The Wings to Fly Program is a public-private partnership between the Equity Group Foundation, Mastercard Foundation, UKaid and USAID. The program provides full scholarships that include tuition, room, and board to enable academically gifted but economically disadvantaged and vulnerable children to pursue secondary and tertiary education.
APHIAplus Kamili is a five year project funded by USAID and implemented by a nine member consortium comprised of AMREF, NOPE, ICAP, CHAK, LVCT, KRCS, PATH, Land O'
Lakes, with JHPIEGO as the lead partner. AMREF’s role within APHIAplus Kamili entails working with local Community Based Organisations to provide care and support to OVCs, and was for this reason able to link the children to the Wings to Fly Scholarship, with facilitation from the consortium’s Acting Chief of Party, Dr Patrick Maranga.
Previous beneficiaries of the Wings to Fly scholarship under the AHIAplus Kamili project are going back to their communities to serve as mentors to their younger brothers and sisters.
The APHIAplus Kamili project and other potential sponsors like the CDF will also endeavour to provide school fees for other outstanding students from their project areas and cater for ensuing needs such as uniforms, lamps , paraffin and food while they are at school.
