AMREF Uganda received an award certificate of Merit from the National youth council and the Kabale youth council during the international youth day celebrations on the 12th of August 2012 in Kabale District South West Uganda. The award was handed to the Ag. Country Director Dr Susan Wandera Kayizzi by his excellency the Vice president of the republic of Uganda, Edward Kiwanuka Sekandi at the Kabale municipal stadium.
AMREF was recognised for her contribution in youth sexual and reproductive health, water and sanitation programmes, youth entrepreneurship skills development, practical delivery to the youth and for always answering the call at the time of need.

AMREF Uganda implemented a youth-focused project from 2005 to 2009 called the 'Kabale Youth Empowerment Project'. The goal of the project was to contribute towards poverty reduction in Kabale district through increasing and improving the participation of young people in training and decision making. AMREF also implemented the 'Kabale Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Improvement Project' from 2008 to 2010 in partnership with Kabale district local government. The project focused on improving the health status among the school age population through reducing the incidence of water borne diseases.
Over the years, AMREF has worked with numerous youths in other parts of the country. In Central Uganda, AMREF implemented various youth projects with the overall aim of reducing the vulnerability of young people to HIV/AIDS . AMREF initiatives were geared towards increasing the sexual and reproductive health knowledge of the youth in Central Uganda. These included strengthening mechanisms for behavior change and building institutional and community capacities to address issues of sexual and reproductive health in a sustainable way.
The international youth day is meant to provide an opportunity to the entire global community to collectively recognize the potential of the youth, celebrate achievements and re dedicate energies and resources towards the total empowerment of young people.
AMREF is a transparent organisation distributing funds of up to $85 million per year.
