AMREF will participate in the 19th edition of the International AIDS Conference, which runs from July 22-29, 2012 at the Walter E Washington Convention Centre in Washington DC, USA. Click here to view AMREF events at the conference.
AIDS 2012 has been dubbed ‘the biggest HIV and AIDS conference on the planet’, with over 20,000 participants from nearly 200 countries. Under the theme ‘Turning the Tide Together’, the conference is expected to have a positive impact on the HIV and AIDS response globally. During the week, leading scientists, public health experts, policy-makers and the HIV-affected community will discuss means to end the epidemic despite current global economic challenges.
AMREF’s Director General, Dr Teguest Guerma, has been invited to chair a plenary session on ‘TB and HIV: Science and Implementation to Turn the Tide on TB’. AMREF will make an oral presentation on ‘Behaviour Change and Associated Factors among Female Sex Workers in Kenya’, and several poster presentations. The organisation will also showcase its work in the exhibition area of the conference.
During the week, Dr Guerma and AMREF’s Head of HIV/AIDS and TB, Dr Abebe Aberra, will hold meetings with several partner organisations.
Before travelling to Washington, Dr Guerma will hold two high-profile meetings in New York on July 19, one with major AMREF donors, and the other with members of the Africa diaspora. The highlight of the New York visit will be the launch of AMREF’s Stand Up for African Mothers campaign in the United States. The campaign aims to train 15,000 midwives by 2015 to help reduce maternal mortality in Africa and contribute towards meeting Millennium Development Goal 5.
