AMREF Wins Government Recognition for Work with Pastoralist Communities

The Government of Ethiopia has recognised and honoured AMREF for its exemplary development work among pastoral communities in the country. The national award was given by Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, escorted by Dr Shiferaw Teklemariam, Minister of Federal Affairs at the 14th National Pastoralist Day celebrations held at Yabelo town in Oromia Regional State. The big event was attended by ministers, top federal officials, regional presidents, parliamentarians, NGO representatives, regional, zonal and woreda officials as well as pastoralist community members. Dawit Abebe, Regional Manager for AMREF South Omo Programmes, received the award, in the form of a cup and certificate, on behalf of AMREF.

AMREF was described as a model developmental partner in its work with pastoralist communities in Ethiopia and singled out for its good leadership, commitment, determination and concerted effort of staff with the support of its donors.

AMREF Ethiopia Country Director Dr Florence Temu said the award was a tribute to AMREF’s staff not just in South Omo, but the entire Country Programme. “This exciting recognition raises AMREF’s national profile and visibility and will serve to motivate staff to work even harder in all our projects. Let us keep the fire burning for better and greater achievements.

The national award was preceded by similar awards at zonal and regional levels in. The zonal award was given by the South Omo Zonal Administration and Pastoralist Department on January 15, while AMREF Deputy Country Director Dr Awoke Tasew received the regional award from the Pastoral Bureau head of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region at Mizan-Teferi town the Regional Pastoralist Day celebrations on January 20.
