A one–day conference and exhibition entitled ‘ONE GOAL’ - on the links between sports and health and the role of sports in development - is being held on 17 June 2010 at Leriba Lodge, Centurion -  the hotel of residence for the Italian National Football team.

As one of the chosen charities for the Azzurri – the Italian National Football Team (so named for their azure blue team shirts)  – AMREF is delighted to have the support of its partners at the conference. Speakers from partners include the FIFA CSI head - Mr Federico Addiechi; President of the Italian Football Federation - Mr Giancarlo Abet and representatives from UNICEF and the South Africa Government.

Organised jointly by AMREF and UNICEF, the goal and themes for the ‘One Goal’ conference focus on a holistic approach to development of health for young people, using sports as a catalyst.

“The 2010 World Cup Football in South Africa is a unique opportunity to establish common understanding in the country of the important linkages that exist between sports, development and health of young people,” said Ms Penina Ochola, Country Director of AMREF in South Africa.

Leriba Lodge in Centurion has been renamed ‘Casa Azzurri’ for the duration of the Italian team’s stay and holding the conference there enables as much participation of the team as possible.

“By holding the conference at this time, AMREF hopes to spotlight its work in South Africa, develop a shared understanding of the synergy between sports, health and development, and evoke a common interest among stakeholders to expand programmes for children and young people in remote and hard-to-reach districts of South Africa," said Ochola.

AMREF’s Director of Communications, Mr Bob Kioko, said the conference is one of several activities that AMREF has planned to mark the Day of the African Child. “Since the World Cup is happening in South Africa at this time, it is a good opportunity to highlight the importance of youth in the development process. Thus, the conference provides a forum for government, civil society and corporates to discuss participation and engagement of youth and sports in various aspects of development. AMREF believes that partnering with communities is key to positive change, and in particular to improvement of health, and so we will also hold discussions with young people on how they can participate better in sport, health and development.”

The four themes for the conference are:

  • Teaching life skills through sports - active learning models, participatory game-based learning methods
