The African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF) – Africa’s most experienced and
respected health development organisation – is deeply concerned about the needless deaths of African mothers. In some countries, maternal deaths are on the rise. Without urgent action, it is unlikely that African countries will achieve Millennium Development Goal 5 (reducing maternal deaths by 75 per cent by 2015).

AMREF’s international Stand up for African Mothers campaign has been launched to draw
attention to the plight of mothers and raise money to train more midwives in order to save the lives of women and children. AMREF has trained health workers, including midwives, for over 50 years, and through the Stand Up for African Mothers campaign seeks to train 15,000 midwives by 2015. Every midwife can look after 500 women every year, and safely deliver 100 children. Through this campaign, AMREF hopes to contribute to the reduction of maternal deaths in Africa and to achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
