Overall Objectives

The general objective of the course is to share knowledge on Trauma with an aim of equipping participants with core competences necessary for Trauma healing and management.

Specific Objectives

By the end of the course, the participants should be able to:

  1. Explain four core theories in counseling and their view of the human person;
  2. Engage in counseling practice and employ techniques of attending, non anxious listening, observation of verbal and non verbal communication and empathic communication;
  3. Define Trauma;
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of the different causes of Trauma;
  5. Explain the different ways that trauma affects people;
  6. State the stages of recovery from Trauma;
  7. Demonstrate the ability to set up and facilitate a trauma healing support group;
  8. Conduct a debriefing session;
  9. Identify referral systems for further assistance required, e.g., medication and therapy.

Target Group

The course targets health and development workers or those with the potential to offer psychological support to persons that have been through a traumatic moment. It is beneficial to diverse sectors such as health and health-related and educational institutions, social services institutions, faith-based and non-governmental organisations.
