The design of the course aims at providing opportunities for participants to develop a critical perspective towards design and implementation of health promotion within the context of very dynamic social-cultural, economic and environmental realities.  The main thrust of the course is to encourage interdisciplinary approaches to health development by introducing participants to health promotion as a tool-kit for stimulating health actions that build synergy with the traditional biomedical health development model.

Target Audience

The course participants are drawn from health and health-related professionals including: Nurses, Doctors, Pharmacists, Clinical Officers, Community Health Workers, Social/Community Development Workers, Occupational Health Personnel, Project Managers and Project Officers. Others are Educators, Religious leaders, Policy Makers, Program managers, Leaders of Special Interest Groups, Field Extension Workers, Peer Educators (Women and Youth Groups) among others.

General Objective

The general objective is to develop relevant competencies of participants to design and implement health promotion interventions in their countries, organizations or communities.

Specific Objectives

At the end of the course, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the main concepts and principles of health promotion and. education
  2. Outline key skills and approaches necessary for designing health promotion in various settings. 
  3. Explore communication approaches for behaviour change and practice.
  4. Develop appropriate health promotion strategies that contribute to the development of responsive public health systems.
  5. Describe monitoring and evaluation techniques and their application in health promotion interventions.
  6. Demonstrate understanding of advocacy and networking skills appropriate for health promotion development.

  2. Concepts, Principles and values of Health Promotion
  3. Behaviour Change Concepts in Health Promotion
  4. Communication in relation to health promotion
  5. Key Strategies for implementing health promotion programs
  6. Health Education
  7. Health Promotion Material Development
  8. Advocacy and Networking
  9. Planning Health Promotion Programs/Projects
  10. Monitoring and Evaluation of Health Promotion programmes
  11. Final Paper Presentation Seminar

The course takes 10 days of approximately 8 hours each day.  The design of this course is informed by themes and principles of Adult Learning. Participatory learning is therefore a key method in teaching and learning.
