TV Slum
TV Slum an innovative gem of a film set in Dagoretti, a slum inside Kenya's capital city, Nairobi. The film was shot and directed entirely by rehabilitated street children in Kenya. The story tells of the harsh realities of life on the street(drugs, fights, disease) as seen by the children themselves. The 58-minute film revolves around the life of Njoroge, a 22 year old man living on the streets, whose actions are as shocking as they are endearing. In one scene, Njoroge beats up a gang of street boys, collects rubbish and robs people just to raise $4 in order to go and visit his father in the rural area. The tragic-comic reality of life of the street is well captured by 8 street children with the help of an Italian Film Director. (Running Time 58 minutes) (for private viewing only)

This Is My Sister
This is a bittersweet documentary about two sisters coping with the challenge of HIV. Martha, 31, lives in a small, dignified apartment in a densely populated area of Nairobi. She works as a hairdresser and trades in rice and clothing to keep her son Joseph (7) in school and pay the bills. Martha is a positive, dynamic woman who runs at life. Her sister Jane, 28, is working in a restaurant downtown when, feeling concerned about her and her young son Alvinâ's (5) ailing health, she takes an HIV test and learns they are both HIV positive. The film depicts the desperation and hopelessness that Jane descends into upon learning her positive status. the It highlights the lack of services, the lack of understanding by society, and the fear of the stigma attached to the disease. The film depicts how one of the biggest problems for an HIV positive person in Africa is to accept the disease and importantly, to be accepted and helped by others. It also underlines the importance of family and shows how the family unit has been undermined by urbanization. However, the film remains at times sweet and almost comic as Martha's positive attitude even carries the viewer through the dark moments in the film. The sisters real, frank and important story shows us a slice of present day urban African and how, despite the challenges and hardships, with support from society and family, and local services, one can live through, and overcome, the disease. The film finishes with optimism and tenderness. (Running Time 55 minutes) (for private viewing only)

Speak Africa
This is an explosion of views and images from Africa and its people that rivals any 'expert' opinion of how the continent can achieve sustainable development. The film features ordinary people from Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania talking with passion about how they can break the vicious cycle of environmental crisis, poverty and disease. A must watch for anyone who would like to see and hear local voices from Kenya to south Africa standing up to be counted as people with the solutions that can stop the slow grind of poverty in its tracks. Sleepless Nights
CURRENTLY OUT OF STOCK Northern Uganda 2005. Every night, 40,000 children leave their homes. The 'night commuters' walk at least ten kilometres to reach somewhere safe to avoid getting kidnapped by the rebel army and ending up as child soldiers or 'bush wives'. This is the story of Maria, Jean-Paul and Pasquale, three orphans growing up in the 20-year conflict. One night the two boys are too tired to walk and are abducted by the rebels. In order to save Maria from the same fate, Ayoo, her aunt, adopts her and takes her to Italy. Constantly worried, she keeps looking for the boys in Uganda. Two weeks after the kidnapping, Jean-Paul was left injured in the forest but managed to survive. Pasquale would escape four months later. Both are severely traumatised by their experience and therefore are included in a rehabilitation programme for former child soldiers. Sleepless Nights is a dramatic story told by Giobbe Covatta, an Italian actor, who follows Maria, Jean-Paul and Pasquale, all symbols of Uganda's war children. The film's original approach reflects Northern Uganda's dramatic reality, yet shows the children's ability keep their good humour, even under the harshest living conditions. Through an insightful and intelligent humour, the film leaves the viewer with a feeling of empathy and hope rather than sympathy and resignation. Sleepness Nights won the EIUC Human Rights Film Award. (Running Time 59 minutes) (for private viewing only)

Gulu
This one hour film is set in a difficult and little known location, Gulu district in Northern Uganda, on the Sudan border. The filmâ??s narrator and first time visitor to the area, Italian actor Luca Zingaretti, befriends the residents of Gulu who are struggling because they are victims of raids by an army of guerillas rebelling against the official government. These rebels â?? often past victims themselves â?? commit all kinds of atrocities, among them, kidnapping children to enlist to their cause. In addition to the guerilla warfare and the continuous threat of malaria, the most recent large outbreak of Ebola occurred a year before this film was made. This deadly virus was horrifying enough to persuade the inhabitants to return to their villages and risk being murdered by the rebels. Luca Zingaretti's bittersweet story not only concentrates on the tragic side of Gulu, but also attempts to show the vital strong side of this region and its resilient people.
