
Objectives
- To provide experienced physicians from around the world with the opportunity to work with AMREF’s Flying Doctor Emergency Service, providing Air Ambulance services locally and internationally.
- To encourage physicians to fly on aeromedical emergency missions with us.
- To make experienced physicians available to exchange knowledge and skills in emergency care practices with our Air Ambulance service.
Criteria
- Must be a qualified physician, with a minimum of 4 years working experience post graduation, including Intensive care medicine, Pre-hospital care and emergency medicine. Working experience in intensive care medicine is important, as skills and confidence in all emergency procedures e.g. RS intubation, insertion of chest tubes, etc. and the management of mechanically ventilated patients are mandatory. Ideally, volunteer physicians should hold current certificates in Advanced Cardiac-, Trauma- and Paediatric Life Support. Experience in Aeromedical Transport is also advisable.
- Each physician must be financially independent to include accommodation, meals and transport. Minimum cost per stay is about US$ 1000 monthly.
- Each physician will be asked to provide at least one teaching session on a topic covering emergency or Aviation medicine.
- The applying physician must be able to speak English proficiently.
- Minimum stay recommended: 4 weeks
- Each physician must submit copies of:
- Curriculum vitae
- Certificate of Medical degree and specialisation
- Certificate of Medical registration
- Passport
- Professional Indemnity Insurance/ Medical Malpractice (which must be valid for East Africa).
- Two passport size photographs
- Office hours will be from 8.30 am to 5.00 pm unless an evacuation requires an early departure or late return. The physician will also participate in weekend coverage but will not be required to be in the office. A mobile phone will be provided. Scheduling is flexible so each physician will have some free time for traveling.
