Visitors Centre

Visitors' CentreWhilst you wait for your flight to the Mara or if you are just passing through Wilson Airport and always wanted to know the story behind the Flying Doctor Service you can now visit the home of the famous Flying Doctors.

AMREF began in 1957 and our mission was and still is to improve the health of the disadvantaged people in Africa as a means for them to escape poverty and improve the quality of their lives. Our aim has been to ensure that every African can enjoy the right to good health by helping to create vibrant networks of informed communities that work with empowered health care providers in strong health systems.

The operational arm of AMREF is the Flying Doctor Service, one of the leading air ambulance evacuation services in the world. FDS also runs an Outreach Programme, an airborne charity service flying teams of Doctors and surgeons to remote hospitals and clinics bringing health care and training to thousands of underprivileged people each year.

Visitors CentreTo illustrate the work of the Flying Doctor Service we have created a Visitors’ Centre at our base in Wilson Airport. The Centre offers a Museum, showing the rich history of the founders of AMREF and the development of the Flying Doctor Service; an auditorium showing a film of FDS activities and a shop stocked with special souvenirs, branded with our identity, at a range of prices.

The Museum, the auditorium and the shop are combined in a fascinating tour of a working Air Ambulance Emergency Service, including the Control Centre and the aircraft hangar.

Tours can be arranged in advance and can be 20 – 40 minutes long

To arrange a tour, or if you have any queries, please contact the Visitors’ Centre.
