Deaths in childbirth affect 1 in 16 African mothers.

Now AMREF is leading a campaign that aims to solve this unnecessary crisis.

Suggested content format

Ella Mgumba has lost 3 children during childbirth, and lives in fear of losing more - or her own life.

Ella is one of countless women across Africa who face terrible risks in childbirth.

In the USA the chances of death of a mother or baby during childbirth, are 1 in every 60,000.

In many parts of Africa, infant or maternal deaths are as high as 1 in 16.

Fortunately AMREF is working hard to improve the situation as part of the Stand Up for African Mothers campaign.

Our campaign aims to fund thousands of extra midwives, who perform extraordinary services and save countless lives.

A typical African reaches 500 families per year, and saves 10 lives per week.

$0 $2000

But we need many more midwives to prevent the estimated 300,000 infant and maternal deaths each year.

Sign our petition to draw attention to the campaign. We want to get a midwife nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2015, to show the world the value of these critically important health workers.

And we need your support to fund hundreds or thousands more midwives.

My baby died because I could not find a midwife to help me with childbirth.
